[KWPeace-groups] Should we plan an action in KW for "Draw the Line: For People, Peace and the Planet" on Sept 20?

Hello KW Peace!

Saturday, September 20th is the national day of action for “Draw the Line for People, Peace & Planet” that is planned by the Climate Action Network, World Beyond War, David Suzuki Foundation, etc. It is an action to make the links between the climate crisis, the wars & the genocide in Gaza, the rise of militarism & military spending, and the urgent need to protect people and the planet through justice and nonviolence. There will be a big action on Parliament Hill calling on Prime Minister Carney to centre people, peace and planet. There are actions being planned across Canada and even internationally. I wonder if we could do something together in KW on the 20th as well.

There is an urgency here as the climate crisis gets worse, Carney invests in LNG etc, Israel’s genocide backed by the West/NATO is getting even worse in Gaza, the Russia-Ukraine war armed by the West/NATO is escalating (Carney wants to send troops to Ukraine), and the Carney government plans to increase annual military spending from $41 billion to $150 billion within ten years that will impoverish more Canadians – we need to publicly express our opposition to all this!

As I’m finishing my dissertation, I don’t have a lot of time to plan a big event, but I would like to participate in an action and I hope we can do something collectively. If not, at the very least I’m going to stand at the Waterloo Public Square on Saturday, September 20th with my big sign “Militarism fuels the climate crisis. Cut military spending for people, peace and the planet” on Sunday, September at a time that others can join me.

Canada is at a crossroads. The federal government has signalled its priorities: advancing corporate interests, undermining migrants’ rights, violating Indigenous sovereignty and supporting violence abroad. These choices deepen inequality and accelerate environmental destruction.

The only way forward is together. A historic alliance of climate, migrant and economic justice, labour and anti-war organizations is rising to the moment and taking to the streets in a massive show of force.

  *   Put people and communities over corporate profit.
  *   Refuse ongoing colonialism. Uphold Indigenous sovereignty.
  *   Stop blaming migrants. Demand full immigration status for all now!
  *   End the war machine. Stand for justice and peace.
  *   End the era of fossil fuels.

This is more than one day of action. It’s an invitation to deepen solidarity, learn from each other and strengthen alliances that can meet the scale of the crises we face.
