[KWPeace-groups] Climate Community Development Events: January 2023 + Willow River Park Homeless Encampment

Hello everyone,

Please find a list of community climate events below.

I was at the Willow River Park (formerly known as Victoria Park) Homeless Encampment this morning and there are about 20 tents still. The people said that they could use Tim Horton’s cards, Walmart cards, blankets and electric/pocket hard warmers. They also said that the best time to come by the encampment is between 10 am-noon to drop things off at the gazebo. If people are up for it, perhaps we could go together as a group sometime soon and bring them some love and supplies.

I’d be up for a KW peace potluck too.

Thursday, January 26th, 7pm at the Queen St Commons. Please RSVP to (isaiahr at theworkingcentre.org<mailto:isaiahr at theworkingcentre.org>). Space is limited. These events will be held in partnership with 50x30WR, Divest Waterloo, and FaithClimateJustice.

In case you missed it ...

On December 12 (Kitchener Council Meeting), Councillor Clancy's motion opposing Bill 23 passed Kitchener council unanimously, following some discussion. This is great news, and shows that there is some strong solidarity within Kitchener council against this bill.

This motion spoke to Kitchener's ongoing commitment to the TransformWR Climate Action Strategy, updated Regional Official Plan, 50by30, etc. and a need for bold sustainability and climate leadership in our communities. Full language of the motion passed can be found here<https://50by30WR.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=da248502821f06df82d81d5f5&id=f714307bb5&e=711590bcab> on p. 4, replacing "repeal" with "pause the implementation of".

Mayor Vrbanovic's motion on behalf of Ontario's Big City Mayors (OBCM) was also passed, p. 6, which calls for making cities whole financially, and also pausing the implementation of the bill until sufficient consultation with the big cities can take place. Councillor Chapman's motion (p. 2) was deferred, as broader council wanted to see a staff report with more detailed analysis on Bill 23's implications prior to moving this forward.

Important to see this leadership from Kitchener! And, it shows the new council can work together collaboratively to oppose major concerns like Bill 23 - however community support to see this leadership is clearly crucial. Thank you to all who helped vocalize your support.
