There is an excellent documentary film screening this Saturday for the Zonta Film Festival. It is about war resisters who came to Canada during the Vietnam war and during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The filming for Safe Haven took place across southwestern Ontario, including London and the Waterloo Region! Join us and spot familiar places in the region.

SAFE HAVEN weaves together the powerful stories of U.S. war resisters who sought safe haven in Canada during both the Vietnam and Iraq wars. The film also explores the intersection of these two groups of men and women during the Iraq war as many Vietnam era resisters participated in a movement to support the younger generation. SAFE HAVEN shows the reality and the myth of Canada as a welcoming country to those seeking protection. It delves into the worlds and decision making of people deciding to leave home and military service. People who both found safe haven and were forced home discuss their lives on both sides of the border.

Showtime:  Saturday, April 29th 4:30 pm

There will be a live interview with the filmmaker Alison Mountz, after the film.

Lisa Molomot
She is a documentary filmmaker and college professor currently based in Tucson, Arizona, the ancestral lands of the Tohono O'odham Nation and the Pasqua Yaqui Tribe. Her recent work focuses on immigration and immigrant communities, public education and archaeology in the American Southwest. She's currently working on a series of shorts documentaries and a feature about an archeology project in Tucson.

Alison Mountz
She's Professor of Geography and Laurier Research Chair in Global Migration. She is cross-appointed between the School of International Policy and Governance and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, where she directs the asylum lab, Haven and edits the journal Politics & Space. Dr. Mountz teaches courses and advises graduate research on migration and displacement, political and feminist geography, international public policy and global governance.
