Hello and Happy International Peace Day KW Peace!
What an exciting result for the Green Party in Kitchener! Wow!
The Canadian Voice of Women for Peace (VOW) is inviting you to discuss the results of the federal election TONIGHT, Tuesday, September 21, the International Day of Peace. We will discuss together the prospects for climate, peace & disarmament in this new Liberal minority government and share ideas about what we can do. Please see Zoom log-in details below.
LeadNow has just launched a petition to call on the parties to cooperate to tackle the climate emergency and inequality, you can sign it here: https://act.leadnow.ca/Cooperate2021/
This year's UN theme for Peace Day is "2021: Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world": https://www.un.org/en/observances/international-day-peace
I urge you to check out the UN's new Common Agenda that was recently released. It's a critically important global initiative and provides the roadmap that we need to follow for a sustainable and peaceful future: https://www.un.org/en/un75/common-agenda. Notice what is says about peace, conflict prevention, disarmament, cutting military spending etc.
The UN Secretary General's speech about the new "Common Agenda" report and initiative and the General Assembly debate can be viewed here: https://media.un.org/asset/k1i/k1ios29mjc you can watch Canada's Ambassador to the UN Bob Rae's brief remarks about this important UN agenda at 1:06.
I believe this UN "Common Agenda" is totally impossible to achieve with NATO and NATO's irresponsible demands for military spending that diverts precious public resources away from social and environmental needs and for new weapons systems that foment destructive arms races. We must have the courage to publicly and firmly reject NATO's Agenda 2030 and call for Canada to get out of the nuclear-armed military alliance.
Finally, September 26 is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. The Liberal, Conservative and People's Party platforms did NOT include the word "disarmament" and they all totally ignored the issue of Canada's failure to join the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. The NDP, Greens and Community Party did mention disarmament and called for Canada to join the TPNW.
We must redouble our efforts to make peace & disarmament a priority for this new Liberal minority government.
FYI: Plan to celebrate the international day of nonviolence with a virtual talk, "Nonviolence in an Age of Mass Extinctions," featuring Michael Charles Tobias on Saturday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. PDT. The talk is hosted by the Cal Poly Pomona Ahimsa Center and is free. It only requires pre-registration via to: <ahimsacenter at cpp.edu<mailto:ahimsacenter at cpp.edu>>. Registrants will receive zoom link and passcode to join the event. Event details, including talk description and speaker bio, are available at: https://www.cpp.edu/~ahimsacenter/lecture/lecture_10-2-21.shtml
Nonviolence is feminist.
In solidarity for peace, earth and justice,
Tamara
