Hello KW Peace!

I hope everyone is doing well during this lockdown.

Please find below 15 upcoming online events plus 3 petitions to sign below. Please scroll down.

My article "Spending $19 billion on fighter jets won't fight COVID-19 or climate change"
Instead of buying a new weapons system, the federal government should disarm and invest in a Green New Deal was published a few days ago in Ricochet Media: https://ricochet.media/en/3108/spending-19-billion-on-fighter-jets-wont-fight-covid-19-or-climate-change

In solidarity for peace, earth and justice,
Tamara

WEBINAR: FEMINIST CRITICISM TO UNCONSTRAINED MILITARY SPENDING (NO TO NATO'S 2% GDP TARGET)
Featured speaker: Ray Acheson, Director of Reaching Critical Will
Tuesday, May 19
3:30-5:00 EDT
To register email: ontario at vowpeace.org
Join Melissa Weale and Tamara Lorincz for a discussion with Ray Acheson on why we oppose NATO and its 2% GDP target and why we must reduce military spending. Ray is the Director of Reaching Critical Will, the disarmament program of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom. She will share with us her feminist approach to tackling excessive military spending and militarism. Ray and Madeleine Rees recently wrote an important chapter on feminism and military spending in the latest occasional paper entitled "Rethinking Unconstrained Military Spending" for the UN Office of Disarmament Affairs. Tamara will also discuss briefly the NATO defence expenditure report and Canadian military spending. We will also discuss what we must do to move the money from militarism to urgent social and environmental needs. Join the discussion and share your ideas for peace and disarmament.

WEBINAR: U.S. ARMS SALES IN THE TIME OF COVID-19
Wednesday, May 20 from 1:30pm - 2:30pm
The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged global responses and resources. Yet U.S. arms sales continue, including to governments with repressive regimes and considerable human rights concerns. In April 2020 alone, the Trump administration notified Congress of more than $2 billion in potential weapons exports. With COVID-19 prompting the United States and international arms purchasers to reassess their own military expenditures, the current environment may present an opportunity to rethink the United States' approach to global arms sales. Join a discussion on the ways the administration and Congress can revise approaches to the U.S. arms trade of the future.
Speakers:
Brittany Benowitz, Chief Counsel, American Bar Association (ABA) Center for Human Rights
William Hartung, Director, Arms and Security Program, Center for International Policy
