Hello KW peace!
I hope you are all doing OK during this lockdown.
I wanted to find out if anyone is willing to lead/organize a solidarity demonstration outside of MP Chagger’s office this Thursday, June 11 for the cross-Canada day of action “Stop arming Saudi Arabia”.
You can find more information below and on Facebook here “War is Not Essential: Day of Action #StopArmingSaudi”: https://www.facebook.com/events/572459100074385/
The Day of Action is being organized by Labour Against the Arms Trade, People for Peace, Canadian Voice of Women for Peace, Amnesty International, Council of Canadians, Women’s International League for Peace & Freedom.
I’m looking for someone to be the point person for a demo outside of Chagger’s office on Thursday. I will be in London for the protest outside the General Dynamics plant if anyone wants to come with me there. It just requires standing for an hour with a sign and taking a picture.
Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks a lot!
Tamara

Dear Tamara,
In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada has lifted the moratorium on issuing arms exports permits for weapons destined for Saudi Arabia, and Light Armoured Vehicles (LAVs) continue to be manufactured in London, ON under the label of an essential service.
The ban, which was put in place following the brutal murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, has been lifted based on Global Affairs Canada’s assessment<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754718&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> that Canadian exports do not pose a substantial risk of misuse by Saudi Arabia.
We disagree, and have made that clear<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754719&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> to the government.
Thank you for calling on Canada to suspend arms sales to Saudi Arabia. On June 11th, you can get louder by joining us for the National Day of Action to #StopArmingSaudi<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754720&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0>.
WHEN: Thursday, June 11th at 1:00 PM EST
WHERE: If you live in London, ON, you can join a physically-distant vigil outside the General Dynamics Land Systems Factory (1991 Oxford St E)<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754721&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0>. Please email<mailto:peopleforpeace.london at gmail.com?subject=%23StopArmingSaudi%20Day%20of%20Action> local organizers for details.
ACROSS CANADA: No matter where you are, join us for a simultaneous <https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754722&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> virtual protest<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754723&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> to show your solidarity and hear from speakers on the ground and at the forefront of the movement to #StopArmingSaudi.

More information:
In April 2020, Canada lifted the moratorium<https://e-activist.com/ea-action/enclick?ea.url.id=4754727&clid=1770&ea.campaigner.email=GY9KhzwZuPupjSP31zY9lA==&ea.campaigner.id=RECMr2WRqQyZkArzVWMSmA==&ea_broadcast_target_id=0> on issuing arms exports permits for weapons destined for Saudi Arabia.
There are many reasons to halt these exports. Saudi Arabia heads up a coalition that has been waging war in Yemen for over five years, and the United Nations has noted that continued arms exports are fuelling the conflict. There have been many violations of international law, including serious acts of violence against women and children.
Canadian arms exports just don’t line up with Canada’s legal commitment under the Arms Trade Treaty or a feminist foreign policy. And the actions of some arms companies in the US and UK demonstrate manufacturing can be shifted to fill important social needs.
Thanks again for taking action to stop the transfer of these deadly weapons to Saudi Arabia and promote peaceful, socially useful jobs for Canadian workers.
Sincerely,
Justin & Ailish
